Unlocking Optimal Well-being: The Power of Holistic Health

Holistic Health

Aren't We Healthier Today?

The average life expectancy in the developed world has increased in recent decades. However, this does not necessarily mean that we are healthier. In fact, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests that we are sicker than ever before.

There are several factors that contribute to this decline in health. One is the deteriorating quality of our environment. The air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat are all more polluted than they were a century ago. This pollution can lead to a variety of health problems, including respiratory problems, heart disease, and cancer.

Another factor that contributes to our declining health is our level of daily movement and exercise. We are more sedentary than ever before, and we eat more processed foods and junk food. This lack of exercise and poor diet can lead to weight gain, obesity, and a host of other health problems.

The good news is that we can take steps to improve our health. By making changes to our environment, our lifestyle, and our diet, we can reduce or eliminate our risk of developing chronic diseases and live longer, healthier lives.

Returning to the way our ancestors lived

To reclaim our health, we can draw inspiration from our ancestral connection with nature and adopt lifestyle practices reminiscent of primal humans and tribal societies. By embracing food sourced directly from the earth free from pesticides, breathing clean air devoid of pollution, engaging in regular physical activity, consuming water free from harmful chemicals, and prioritizing sufficient sleep, we can restore our well-being. These are just a few examples of health-promoting behaviours that many individuals in today’s modern society overlook.

The CHEK Institute summarises these practices as the six foundational principles of health. They are as follows:

Thinking

The health of your mind and body is predominantly shaped by the thoughts and emotions you experience on a daily basis. This concept is remarkably straightforward: our brain serves as the command center for every aspect of our being. Notably, our thoughts and emotions exert a direct influence on our intricate hormonal and nervous systems, leaving a profound impact.

Breathing

The act of breathing entails a substantial number of repetitions on a daily basis. It’s crucial to recognize that oxygen serves a vital purpose beyond mere survival; it plays a pivotal role in numerous bodily functions. Without an adequate supply of oxygen, our ability to endure would be limited to a mere three minutes. Therefore, it is imperative to consider both the quality and quantity of the air we breathe each day, and to appreciate how it profoundly affects our well-being.

Water

The human body is composed of approximately 80% water, highlighting its essential role in our existence. Without an adequate water supply, our survival is limited to only a few days. It is crucial to recognize the significance of the quality and quantity of water we consume daily and to understand its profound impact on our well-being. Consider the quality of the water you consume. How clean and safe is it?

Nutrition

As mammals, humans are inherently adapted to thrive by consuming natural resources, including plants and animals. The well-being of each cell within our bodies is intricately linked to the food we consume. Notably, the energy necessary for fuelling our cognitive processes and generating our thoughts originates from the food we eat. Eat real, organic whole foods from the earth that are as close to their natural state as possible.

Movement

Physical movement maintains muscle tone, strength, and bone mineral density, as well as promoting healthy fluid circulation throughout the body. It is crucial to consider both the quality and quantity of your daily movement. Also, consider the between “working-out” (e.g. weightlifting or surfing) and “working-in” (e.g. yoga or meditation), as your needs can change based on your energy and stress levels.

Sleep

It is important to consider both the quality and quantity of your sleep each night and understand how it impacts your well-being. Pay attention to various factors, such as your circadian rhythms and how well they align with the natural cycles of sunrise and sunset. There is nothing magic about 8 hours sleep if started after 10:30pm.
